Entry #3 Slanted Reporting... is it possible to write an interesting article with out opinion?

Hello fellow adventurers! Today i figured we would talk about slanted reporting. What is that you ask? Good question. Slanted reporting is when a writer writes an article and gives their opinion through out the article. They example I figured I would use is this one. Rotten tomatoes is garbage. As the article says the writer talks about Rotten Tomatoes and how they have ruined movie watchers. They author gives their opinion multiple times in this article. It is very slanted in a negative attitude towards Rotten Tomatoes.

Now that you know what slanted reporting is, can a report be written with out giving an opinion? In my personal opinion I say no. Even when writing a scientific article is not the writer trying to prove their opinion? I know that is not as slanted as the article I linked prior, but still slanted in my opinion. I actually prefer slanted articles because they are more interesting to read which is the point. I believe you just have to read every article carefully, don't take everything they say as 100% proof. Be diligent and don't get caught up in their hysteria or excitement. Make your own decision.
Enjoy reading your articles, news stories, and scandalous celebrity gossip. Just please remember most of it is slanted and you should read more than one article or research the topic yourself before making your final decision.

Until next time, I hope you roll a high initiative

  1. Hi Christopher, I always suspected Rotten Tomatoes may be "slanted". I do think most of the movies that acutally good get red tomatoes but there are a handful that have had me shaking my head. I do agree the good reviews are there to entice us to watch movies. I read the article and I thought "Tar" was terrible. There are typically multiple reviewers. I guess one has to pick a reviewer that has made a good review that you agree with like Roger Ebert, that you look to for a review that aligns with your preferences. I also believe there are some that will go with the PR machine initiative (to use your word). It seems a lot of these reviews as with Amazon reveiws that are there to trick you into buying or watching etc. Thanks for the article. Jack Mardell

  2. I agree. Rotten tomatoes is a negative source. Slanted articles can be more interesting but I feel some of them can be more opinion than facts to be honest. For example, rotten tomatoes is a website mostly of opinions because people are giving their own opinion on these movies. And then as the article you put in this post says, " Its math stinks." Drew Magary explains how they calculate wether a movie is rotten or not but there's no proof behind that. Good work on finding a slanted article.

  3. I've been annoyed by Rotten Tomatoes for some time; I don't think their binary system is nuanced enough to give an accurate take on how people feel about a movie. However, my favorite movie that I saw in theaters last year was "Tar," (sorry Jack) and I do get an ego boost when a RT score agrees with my personal opinion, so there's that. -Mr. Chad Merrell
